girls a brighter future.
AWARE Inc. in Juneau, AK is the affiliate agency to GOTR International.
Girls on the Run of Greater Alaska implements GOTR as a domestic violence/sexual assault (DV/SA) prevention program. The program strengthens protective factors that decrease the likelihood that girls will become victim to DV/SA in the future by:
2008: Aiding Women in Abuse and Rape Emergencies (AWARE) first began dreaming of GOTR with the Juneau Violence Prevention Coalition. In the fall of 2008, AWARE launched a pilot GOTR program at two schools in Juneau.
2009: Ninety-nine girls registered for GOTR of Juneau. In 2009, additional communities in Southeast Alaska requested GOTR and we expanded the program in partnership with Women in Safe Homes (WISH) in Ketchikan and Sitkans Against Family Violence (SAFV) in Sitka. Thus, we became GOTR of Southeast Alaska and began expanding the reach of our program.
2014: Since becoming GOTR of Southeast Alaska, we have implemented GOTR in 14 communities in the panhandle region of the state. This has been done through strong partnerships with domestic violence/sexual assault program partners WISH and SAFV.
2015: With support from Alaska’s Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, AWARE expanded their territory across Alaska (with the exception of Anchorage and the Mat-Su Borough, which are served by GOTR of Southcentral Alaska). We changed our name to GOTR of Greater Alaska and began partnering with DV/SA agencies across the state to bring GOTR programming to girls in all areas of the state. Domestic violence/sexual assault programs in Homer, Cordova, and Fairbanks joined us to bring GOTR to their communities.
